UNDIP Biotechnology Student Presented Microalgae-Based Bioremediation Research at The 11th ICRIEMS 2026 through Students Go International WCU Program

Yogyakarta — A Biotechnology student from the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), Adeline Hartono, successfully participated in The 11th International Conference on Research, Implementation, and Education of Mathematics and Sciences (ICRIEMS) 2026, held on 2–4 June 2026 at the Master’s and Doctoral Building, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY). Her participation was supported through the Students Go International (SGI) program under the World Class University (WCU) initiative of Universitas Diponegoro, which encourages students to actively engage in international academic activities and strengthen their global competitiveness.

ICRIEMS 2026 is an international scientific conference that brings together researchers, educators, scientists, practitioners, and students from various countries to share research findings, exchange innovative ideas, and foster academic collaboration across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The conference serves as an important platform for promoting interdisciplinary research and strengthening international networks in support of sustainable development.

During the conference, Adeline presented a research entitled “Bioremediation of Oilfield Brine Water Using Nannochloropsis oculata for Integrated Waste Treatment and Biomass Production.” The study explored the potential of the marine microalga Nannochloropsis oculata as a biological agent for the treatment of oilfield brine water while simultaneously producing valuable biomass. As a preliminary study, the research demonstrated the ability of the microalga to grow in media containing oilfield brine water, highlighting its potential for future development of sustainable microalgae-based bioremediation systems.

Presenting the research at ICRIEMS 2026 provided valuable opportunities to exchange scientific ideas with international researchers and academics, receive constructive feedback, and broaden professional networks across multidisciplinary fields. Participation in an international conference also strengthened scientific communication skills and expanded academic perspectives on current developments in environmental biotechnology and sustainable resource management.

Adeline’s participation reflects the commitment of the Students Go International (SGI) program under the World Class University (WCU) Universitas Diponegoro in supporting students to gain international exposure through scientific forums. By encouraging students to present their research on the global stage, the program contributes to enhancing academic excellence, research visibility, and the international reputation of Universitas Diponegoro.

Through continued participation in international conferences such as ICRIEMS, Biotechnology students are expected to strengthen research collaboration, develop innovative solutions to global environmental challenges, and contribute to the advancement of biotechnology for sustainable development. The achievement also demonstrates the important role of young researchers in promoting Indonesian scientific innovation within the international academic community.
